His and hers Cocktails

Valentine's Day is around the corner! Let's celebrate!

My husband, Willy, and I definitely have a love of cocktails in common. We take turns being in charge of mixing them up for one another. Sometimes we go for the old standards – Manhattans especially (one of the readings at our wedding was the Manhattan recipe off the back of a bitters bottle!) – and sometimes we like to try something new.

This Valentine's, we'll be mixing up some recipes from Alicia Rebensdorf, the owner of the bar Tuffet in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. She came up with this recipes just for us and took her inspiration from the Love & Victory Ours Decanter Set, mixing up a pair of His & Hers cocktail recipes.

Hers – Rosemary Aperol Spritz

1 oz rosemary gin  (let one sprig of rosemary infuse in a cup of gin for 1-2 days)

His – MeZcal Negroni

cocktail recipe

This snowy day in New York City calls for a warm, wintery cocktail, so we took the opportunity to mix up our pal, Kathryn Weatherup's, recipe for a Dodge 'Em cocktail, made with Scotch and rosemary-infused date syrup.

Have you visited her eponymous cocktail bars, Weather Up, in Austin, Brooklyn, or Manhattan? They're just the coziest, prettiest spaces, and the cocktails are impeccable.

Click through for pics, and the recipe is below! They are fantastic. And I think Willy's going to be pretty pumped to come home to one tonight!

Here's the recipe. We halved the Date Syrup, and it's still plenty for a party.

Dodge 'Em

4 oz Apple Cider (flat)
1 -1/2 oz Scotch or 2 if you want to knock people over
3/4 oz Date Syrup
1/4 oz Lemon Juice

Garnish with a sprig of rosemary & cracked pepper. Serve hot!

Date Syrup

3/4 cup dates
1/2 T peppercorns
1 sprig rosemary
1/2 quart brown sugar
1/2 quart water
Boil, simmer, blend and strain through fine mesh sieve. And sieve again.
Salt to taste

Full disclosure: we blended thoroughly but didn't strain. Couldn't find a sieve and were too lazy for cheesecloth, and the prospect of a midday drink was too exciting. Glasses are from our Ours Decanter Set in the Hers/Hers variety.
