ORGEAT. FIRST OFF, HOW IN THE WORLD DO YOU PRONOUNCE IT?

It's pronounced ôr-zhä’(t) or for those of you who don't have a pronunciation key handy, OHR-ZHAT with a Z sort of like Zsa Zsa Gabor!

What is it AND HOW SHOULD I USE IT?

Orgeat Syrup is a non-alcoholic, almond-based syrup. It's sweet and is used to add flavor to some of our favorite cocktails, especially tropical tiki drinks. like the Mai Tai and the Scorpion.

How can I make MY very own?

(Recipe adopted from The Art of The Drink)
3 1/4 c raw almonds
3 1/2 cups water
3 1/2 cups sugar
1/2 cup vodka or brandy
2 T orange or rose flower water (optional)

Submerge almonds in a bowl with half the (cold) water for half an hour.
Drain the water from the bowl and crush the almonds finely.
Mix crushed almonds with remaining water.
Cover bowl with cheese cloth and let sit for two hours.
Strain liquid through cheese cloth, and save liquid in bowl.
Return almonds to liquid, and let sit for another hour, and repeat straining process. (the cheese cloth with soak up the almond oils)
Discard the almond pulp, and cook the remaining liquid with the sugar on low heat, stirring constantly. Remove from heat once sugar is fully dissolved.
Let cool for 15 minutes, and then add the orange flower water and the vodka or brandy.
